Martin Scorsese to Direct Frank Sinatra Film
May 24, 2009
Martin Scorsese will direct the first feature film about Frank Sinatra, which will be titled Sinatra.
Sinatra’s daughter Tina will be the film’s executive producer. The negotiations with the Sinatra family took several years to decide how to best tell his life story.
The film will be made by the General Electric owned company, Universal Pictures and Mandalay Pictures. They have not yet cast the role of Frank. One of the possible choices is Ryan Phillippe who has expressed in the past that he would want to play the role of Sinatra since he is a big fan. Phillippe’s daughter Ava is named after Sinatra’s second wife Ava Gardner, and his bulldog is named Frank Sinatra.
Mandalay Pictures president Cathy Shulman said the film will be "an unconventional biopic. It's not a cradle-to-the-grave traditional portrait of the consecutive events in a man's life. Instead it's more of a collage and, in many ways, it will feel like an album itself. It's a collection of various moments and impressions in his life and together we hope they'll tell the full story and present full themes."
Shulman is co-producing the film with Mandalay Chairman Peter Guber.
Sinatra performed on more than 1,400 musical recordings, and acted in 58 films. He died in 1998 from a heart attack at 82 years old.

Ryan Phillippe would be a good pick. He seems to be a big fan, and he's a good actor. He also looks like Frank.
