"Britain's Got Talent" Star Susan Boyle Enters and Exits Mental Clinic
June 5, 2009
Gerry Boyle, the brother of “Britain’s Got Talent” runner-up Susan Boyle, said on British TV Thursday that Susan has left the mental-health clinic she entered Sunday for an “anxiety attack.” The 48-year-old singer was admitted to the $1,100 per night mental-health clinic Priory in London a day after she earned second place in the “Britain’s Got Talent” finale.
Police were called Saturday by TV producers after Boyle acted strangely at her London hotel, and they said she was "exhausted and emotionally drained.”
A couple anonymous sources told a British newspaper that Boyle caused "a bit of a stir" at the hotel, and "She didn't look well - she looked lost, [gic] not all there.”
A representative for the TV company responsible for the talent show TalkbackThames commented, "Following Saturday night's show, Susan is exhausted and emotionally drained. She has been seen by her private GP [general physician] who supports her decision to take a few days out for rest and recovery. We offer her our ongoing support and wish her a speedy recovery."
Allegedly, Boyle ran down a corridor shouting "I hate this show" after she was beaten by a dance troupe in the final.
The Sun quoted a show source as saying, "Susan couldn't stop crying and couldn't calm down."
"She worked herself into such a frenzy that she fainted. We called down for a doctor and the production company called their GP, who arrived with a psychiatrist to assess Susan as she'd been under extreme pressure," the source added.
A senior show source said, "We're all quite shaken. Susan spent the entire day in tears. We knew we had to call a doctor to see her."
A source said, "Susan was distraught and convinced they'd taken her cat. She was crying she hadn't fed Pebbles and flapping her arms like a confused child. It was incredibly distressing. She was talking to herself then went quiet."
Her cousin Irish Green Party Senator Dan Boyle commented during the week amid speculation as to why Boyle was admitted to Priory Clinic.
He said, "The showbiz world can be quite bitchy. In these TV shows, it’s all about being controversial to entertain people."
He also said that an individual “gets lost" in these shows, and "She is in a very uncomfortable place at the moment, and it’s completely understandable that exhaustion would follow."
Gerry Boyle also said Thursday that his sister Susan now feels “a lot more like herself,” and feels better because she was assured by some music executives that it “wasn’t the end” of her singing career.
Susan Boyle drew 20.2 percent of the 4 million votes cast in the final, and the winning dance troupe Diversity won 24.9 percent of the vote.
