Mariah Carey Hits Back at Eminem with New Song

Today Mariah Carey’s new song “Obsessed” debuted on radio. It’s a comeback to the recent comments Eminem has been making about her including: he “peed on her;” had sex with her. She accuses Eminem of acting obsessed because of using “weed” or “E” [Ecstasy] and compares him to a “mom and pop” store vs. she as the corporation. There is some truth to the statement since Eminem went to rehab for drug addiction and even said recently on Jimmy Kimmel’s show that Elton John is one of his addiction sponsors.

“Obsessed” is a mid-tempo hip-hop song with Mariah singing mostly in her mid-vocal range. The melody of the verses is very similar to the verse melody in her other song “Side Effects.” The new song also includes a part that is similar to the stuttering in Jamie Foxx’s “Blame It.” Since there is this reference, and the Eminem comments are only about a month old, Mariah’s song must have been composed fairly recently. “Obsessed” is the second Eminem comeback song Mariah’s made: the first being 2002’s “Clown.” It makes you wonder why she would even care to address him – it must mainly be for publicity, but the funny thing is that journalists would write about any new song she makes regardless. The other thing is that both Mariah and Eminem are on the same record label: Universal Music, so the company executives must think it will be good for the publicity of the company overall.

It’s not my favorite Mariah song, but I know all of her songs. It’s a very good song that will have you singing after the first chorus. The topic is a little different from most current songs, which is good. The only downside to it is that its chorus is a little crass, a little too long and didn't need the "Blame It"-esque part. The picture for the single is probably several months old because Mariah is a good bit heavier now than she is in that picture. I have no idea why she thinks it’s attractive to have her breasts look as fake and as huge as possible, and oddly she has wet hair but her body is dry. Mariah’s new album will be available to buy August 25.
