Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said Friday that she will not speak any more about her charge that the CIA lied to her about using waterboarding on war detainees.
Pelosi said at a D.C. new conference, “I don’t have anything more to say about it. I stand by my comment.”
CBS News correspondent Bob Fuss said Pelosi would not answer the sea of followup questions from the other reporters at the conference, and she said that the topic was a distraction from issues such as global warming and health care.
Last Thursday House Republicans demanded a bipartisan panel investigate Pelosi’s claims. However, Democrats and Republicans Walter Jones of North Carolina and Ron Paul of Texas joined in a 252 to 172 vote blocking the resolution.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-MD commented on the CIA interrogation program, which at one point included waterboarding, or simulated drowning: “This is a serious matter. But it's not being treated seriously. It's being treated politically."
Some Republicans, such as House Republican Leader John Boehner of OH claim the enhanced interrogation techniques were necessary to obtain intelligence after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
