CA Supreme Court Upholds Ban on Same-Sex Marriage

May 26, 2009

Today the California Supreme Court ruled to uphold the ban on same-sex marriage. It was a 6 to 1 ruling.

The state Supreme Court ruled to allow same-sex marriage last spring, and that ruling was overturned in November by voters through a state ballot proposition vote, Proposition 8.

Approximately 18,000 same-sex marriages that were granted prior to the November vote are still legal according to the high court.

The court stated that retroactively applying the proposition would cause "throwing property rights into disarray, destroying the legal interests and expectations of thousands of couples and their families, and potentially undermining the ability of citizens to plan their lives.”

Hundreds of people were arrested today while protesting the court’s decision.
